Welcome to plyometrics 101. Today we will be discussing what plyometrics is and why all athletes and recreational gym goers should be involved.

 

What is Plyometrics?

You may have heard this term in recent years as it is a training method which has gained, and is gaining in popularity due to its research efficacy and benefit in sports training and general health. Plyometrics can simply defined as a group of exercises which involves short, intense bursts of activity, commonly through the action of jumping. But why should you be doing it?

 

The Benefits of Plyometrics

Plyometrics is popular with top athletes due to its ability to boost strength, power and agility. Plyometrics should be used by any athlete who relies on quick, powerful movements such as those in basketball, rugby, volleyball, soccer, tennis and track and field. Some of the many benefits include:

  • Improves your fitness and burns calories
  • Increases muscular strength and power
  • Improves athletic performance
  • Improves coordination and balance

Below are some bread and butter exercises of plyometrics:

  • Box jumps
  • Clap push ups
  • Side jumps
  • Forward long jump
  • Burpees
